Abstract

We have analyzed 202 questionnaires returned from public health dentist¢¥s, in 1996 in KOREA in order to check out their role, at public health centers.

The obtained results are as followings.
1. 69% public health dentists think of preventive and public oral health program as their main roles. For example, an average of 22.4 cases of, preventive care were performed monthly per public health center, and 7.6 cases of joining the public oral health program per half year. Moreover, the signifies that the role is being, regarded less and less as the time passes by.
2. There are less supports from governmental officers, who have less will to promote the public oral health programs. One of the big problem is the lack of equipment for preventive care or public oral health activities at public health centers. There are a lot of complaints from public health dentists having no chance to practice on preventive and public oral health programs in their dental schools.
3. In order to promote, the preventive & public oral health programs in KOREA, we should have proper policies, plans, and systems for public oral health programs at the governmental level. Moreover, the emphasizing of practical education for preventive and public health dentistry in dental schools as well as continuing education for public health dentists and dental hygienists is needed.
